Excess mortality in Turkey

Between 11 March 2020 – 24 August 2021 in 13 provinces and 8 provincial centers 83 thousand more people died than the average of the previous years. Turkey’s projection of these excess deaths reached 171 thousand.

Turkish authorities do not release the death toll. There is no official all-cause mortality figure for the pandemic period in Turkey. But some Turkish municipalities are announcing the deaths in their cities. This study attempts to calculate excess mortality during the Coronavirus pandemic with death data obtained through these announcements.

We collected death data by webscraping with the help of software from many municipal websites. We compared the data we obtained with the data of TurkStat over the past years. In this way, we checked whether the municipal data is proportionally compatible with the TurkStat data. As a result of these comparisons, we decided that the data of 21 municipalities is consistent. In these cities, 47% of all deaths of Turkey occurred in 2019.

We used the average of the past years seen in the list below.

2015-2019: İstanbul, Uşak-C
2017-2019: İzmir, Bursa,Çorum-M, Denizli, Erzurum, Kahramanmaraş, Kayseri-P, Konya-P, Malatya, Osmaniye-C, Trabzon
2018-2019: Diyarbakır, Elazığ-C, Gaziantep, Hatay-P, Kocaeli, Sivas-C
